If BBQ Makes You Thirsty, the Bubba Keg Grill May Do the Trick

If you haven't seen one yet, there's a new killer ceramic style cooker on the market from the makers of those cool mugs and coolers, Bubba Keg.

While we live in a society of convenience, where microwaves and gas grills predominate, there is a satisfied, very satisfied, minority of outdoor chefs that know how truly different food can taste when cooked over charcoal. They know the benefit of true barbecue, cooked or smoked "low and slow" where the meat comes out with a succulent smokey flavor. And by the way, it comes out juicy too! How many accidents have you had with high temperature grilling on the gasser?

The convenience is often your enemy.

While many BBQ purists love their barrel smokers with offset boxes, or their vertical smokers that look like gun safes, there are others that have found the near perfect heat retention and control of a ceramic, or kamado style grill. These are awesome units that are efficient, eye-catching, heavy and expensive...in that order. So, it's not surprising that we don't see one on every back porch in America.

And then came a fantastic idea from a company that's all about having fun. Why not take the concept used to keep drinks warm (or cold) to deliver and affordable, and portable, alternative to the average outdoor cook? The end result is a convection cooker that looks like a keg of beer. And it even has bottle openers under the handle in case you thirst for one.

Bubba Keg Grills are built with a double wall of enamel coated steel, surrounding a Fiberglas insulation known as Bubba Foam. This could be the most efficient outdoor cooker ever designed. Here's what else it has:
Top and bottom dampers that have numbered positions for precise airflow control The temperatures can range from 200 F to 800 F and the outside stays cool to the touch It uses 100% natural lump charcoal, and not much of it because it's so efficient A "multi-tool" is included which does everything from clean ashes, to cleaning the cooking surface to opening the dampers to lifting the cooking grate. Unlike gas grills, it can perform high temperature searing, fire-oven baking, oven-style roasting and low and slow smoking. It comes standard with two easily detachable side tables. You get two levels of cooking surface, unlike the competition. The front hood handle has two built in bottle openers. And it's the first to come with an included trailer hitch adaptor for taking this baby on the road.
The Bubba Keg grill is the first ceramic-style cooker you'll see prominently at your local Home Depot, right out there in front of all the gas grills. That's because it's something that can sell. It's hundreds of dollars less than the comparable ceramic cookers currently on the market.

The first video I saw demonstrating low and slow cooking didn't even use half the charcoal basket, maybe 1-2 pounds of lump, and after 4 hours at 200 F, most of the charcoal was still unused! That's efficiency and together with the low price (and high quality, very high quality) it's a great alternative to expensive propane in these trying times.

If you are in the market for a new outdoor cooker, check these out and decide for yourself before emptying your wallet on a ceramic cooker.
